"Three Fingers" by Rich Koslowski
Its a mockumentry about the cartoon industry and why cartoons have three fingers. Its great. Its a graphic novel, which is a thicker comic book. Check it out at your library. Its good fun.

It's easier to draw. Back in the days when each frame was drawn by hand, cutting back to three fingers and a thumb saved tons of money/time.
If you pay attention on the Simpsons, there are a bunch of subtle jokes about the three fingers.

Most have four— but it's easier to draw. To get the puffy cartoonish "Simpsons" look, having five fingers on a hand makes the hand look crowded and displeasing to the eye.

I'll add my voice to the "easier to draw" crowd and add a plus 1 to the column for "4 would be visually crowded".

easier to draw, with some older characters i think it was an artistic style choice to avoid confusion with similar characters

I believe it was a decision originally made at Disney simply to save time/money.
