OK your laptop is able to surf the web mean that your wireless is set-up correctly. Does your desktop need wireless, if so, you need to install a wireless network card and its driver. If not , you still can use a LAN cable to connect to the wireless router (provided there is one LAN port available).
Assume the cabling or wireless connection is working, the next thing is to ensure that both your laptop and your desktop workgroup name must be the same in the Control Panel --> Performance and Maintenance --> Systems --> Computer Name. Eg. workgroup : MSHome . After setting the workgroup, the next thing is to identify which folder of files you want to share with the both computer. Go to explorer , right click the files , it is in sharing and security, then proceed to set the sharing condition.
If above setting still do not work, then you need to ensure that both computer can communicate with each other by doing the ping test. This may seem too complicated now and so you need to contact the computer specialist for advise on how to set the IP address. Hope this help.

you need to workgroup the computers together so you can share info between them.
right click my computer-choose properties-click the computer name tab-click the change button-type in a workgroup name-click ok-the computer will need to reboot
do that on both computers. give both computers the same workgroup name.
then when both computers have booted back up you can go into network places. in here you might see a shared folder from the other computer that will be the folder that is used to share between the pc's. if you dont see it then click on view workgroup computers. there you should see an icon for the other computer that you can double click then you should see the shared folder im talking about.
if you cant see or you can see but cannot access this folder there are a few things you can try. sometimes workgroups are easy to set up and sometimes they are a pain in the butt for some reason.
one thing is create the same user account on both pc's.
set up permissions on the shared folder to grant access.
turn on the guest account and give it a password.
another way you can make the computers talk is through remote desktop. which comes automatically with xp.
if you are running xp try this.
1st thing you will have to do to both copmuters is allow remote connections. right click on my computer-choose properties-click the remote tab-check the box that says allow users to connect remotely-hit ok or apply-
next
click start-all programs-accessories-communications-remote desktop.
once you have that open go to the other pc click start-run-type this cmd-hit enter-type this ipconfig-hit enter- this will provide you with the ip address of that computer. should be something like 192.168.1.xxx. take that # to the other computer and type it into the remote desktop window. before you click connect click on options. click on the local resources tab put a check in diskdrives and printers. now you can connect and you will be able to move data between both computers. hope one of those works for you . good luck
