If it were true that the SS is a "fund" you pay into all your life which is what they say about old timers on golf courses pocketing their $2000 per month government paychecks, why is there a double standard for the thousands of dollars that generation X has already payed into and will continue to pay? Why are we less deserving of money we have 'payed into'. We got totally screwed this century, cost of living and other expenses, and the economy isn't anywhere near as easy as it was for WWII generation and even the boomers when they were first starting out.
Generation X is the first one that HAS to have a diploma to scrape by making any kind of living wage and won't even see retirement benefits that WE have supposedly WORKED for!
Why can't we get what we have earned, why are rich old people who were favored this entire century be more deserving? The future doesn't look as bright for X'ers as it was for everyone else.

OMFG! spiritwalker, If it was truly looted then why are already well off people still collecting????
Shouldn't it have been reformed to redistribute a bit better? What evidence do you have that it was democrats fault?

Well Cassandra, your parents or grandparents experience was vastly different from my family. I am from the NY area, my whole family is. My parents and family had it very good and were able to afford most things while starting out, as that was the case overall. My grandparents and most of those who I know did very well for themselves.
I think you are speaking from more the exception than the rule. there are many stuggles for gen. X as you should know- and people are still living in the conditions you meantioned.
I do not appreciate being accused of being uninformed, though I'm not sure what it was exactly you were referring to. I am for third parties, just remember that both the Dems and the Repubs got us into this mess, working together, so maybe you should look a bit closer into what is going on.
Right now, the only truly informed person wouldn't vote for either backstabbing self serving party. I know where the dems stand, will they provide? questionable...

I haven't heard anyone say we don't deserve it, but we sure aren't going to get it. Social Security is a pyramid scheme and the moment our generation was smaller thatn the Boomers, our SS hopes were doomed.

Unlike what the left tells us, SS isn't sitting in some nice big account drawing interest. It is nothing more than a government IOU slip. If you started work at 18 and were taxed the maximum amount of SS for your entire working career and worked until you were 68, all of the money you put in would be returned to you in just over 2 years of retirement. That means that it has to come out of someone else's contributions. That was okay when a lot fewer people lived to 70, but now we live into our 80s-90s-100s and draw SS a lot longer. So technically, the Boomers that are retiring are drawing off the money Gen Xers and Yers are contributing now. By the time we Gen Xers retire, SS will be 45% of the US budget which means that Gen Yers and beyond will not only be paying in SS taxes but their income taxes will be supporting us as well.

The future doesn't like bright IF you're relying solely on SS as your retirement. I would recommend a 401K, and a Roth IRA contributing as much as possible. It would also be wise to invest in real wealth assets like land and jewelry which will retain and even gain in value so you can sell them off and live off that. My wife and I are planning on not having SS at all. If we do, it will just be icing on our retirement cake.

look, we don't know whetyher or not that money will be there. There are gen y who are also paying into it, who may not get it. And baby boomers who have paid into it who won't receive full benefits. Liek I said, it was never meant to be a retirement plan, and for people like my quadriplegic brother (and others who are FAR less fortunate than you or I) are benefitting from social security. We live in a society where those of us who can, take up the slack for those of us who can't. I suggest you take a good look at which one you are, and which one you would rather be. I hear what you are saying, I just think you are overreacting to the situation...you assume that you will live until retirement, and be wroking that whole time. If that turns out to be true, you are more blessed than someone who recieves a $500 a month paycheck they are expected to live on...

Where on earth would you get the idea that people think Gen X doesn't deserve the SS money? Now, I would say anyone utterly stupid and/or depraved enough to have supported Bush probably deserves to lose SS, but it's only the rethuglicans who want to end SS for you. The Dems have been fighting hard to save it. That's why Clinton had a huge surplus and Gore wanted that 'lock box.' So, get informed and work for those who are working for you.

NUMBER TWO - BEFORE YOU WHINE AND CRY TOO HARD FOR YOURSELF, my father grew up in THIS COUNTRY with 9 other sibs sleeping his bed which was made of coats on a spring. He had no running hot water! And he lived in NYC. He, my mom, and most kids they knew had to drop out of school to start supporting their family. And they knew people far worse off than they are.

Perhaps you should get better informed, and then spend time volunteering with the Dems or any other party trying to stop the lying, thieving, mass murdering, social security coveting republicans. Then, go spend some time volunteering with the poor to understand what real struggle is.

Where do you get your misinformation?
Your money will be there, every generation has had that fear.
For some reason you think because you have worked for......I'd say about 3-4 yrs that you have given a life time.
Why can't retired people get what they have put in?
What difference does it make if they are rich??they still payed.
Who pays for your public schooling??? not you.
Give me a break....work for about twenty yrs then you have something to complain about.

edit:
Also generation X is the ones that made SSI checks famous.
Any one that is lazy and can make up a good excuse...here have someone Else's retirement....Our parents and grandparents are the ones that built industrialization in America...they deserve their retirement as much as anyone.
If you want to blame someone blame generation X.

If you look up "Ponzi Scheme" you'll find that it describes a type of investment scheme where investors put in their money with promises of great returns, and then get paid from money put in by later investors.

Ponzi schemes are a form of fraud, and are totally illegal.

Unless the government does it.

Social Security is a Ponzi scheme. It's not a question of whether anyone will be a victim by putting in more than they take out. It's a question of who will be the victim and when.

I'm not aware of anyone saying that "Generation X" does not deserve to collect Social Security that they've paid into. I HAVE heard people say that unless prudent changes are made, that there may be no Social Security for them to collect. That's entirely different.

Because they're selfish. I have no problem supporting the elderly people but I would expect to be supported when I get older. It's a double standard that seriously needs to be re-worked.

It is not that they don't deserve it, it is that with the way the Demorats are spending it, there may not be any. When the Demorats were in power, they "borrowed" millions from the SS fund to build a new office building for senators. Never paid any of it back. Just one of many raids on the fund by the Demorats.

Do you have a bug in your *** about social security today or what?
Did you get turned down at the local welfare office or something?
Seriously those rich old people paid into social security too, so its their ******* right to collect that money. No one thinks generation x doesnt deserve the money they paid into. Then again over inflated sense of self importance always has seemed to be that generations problem.
