The american media are not free, it is only a propaganda machine. Some liberal papers are printing some evil truths now and then, but only liberal people are buying and reading them. (I am German, in our language "liberal" is an adjective you are proud of!)
I am living in the US for about 2 years now, and I am shocked. In Germany I was used to critical journalism all day long, critical questions from all sides, left and right.
Now here in the US I see with shock that there are NO NEWS AT ALL!
Oh, of course you hear propaganda stories like the "heroes" are coming back to town (they show then pictures from a local airport where some men in uniform hug their wives and stuff), or when other "heroes" are deployed from that local airport "to defend our country" (I want to throw up right now).
People are simply not told what is going on in Iraq, and when you ask people on the street, I bet at least 70% of them would say their "heores" are in Iraq because Saddam brought the towers (WTC) down. I bet you, 70%
Their education (in public schools) is hilarious, and I came to the impression that this is exacly what they want to have. Only dumb (uneducated) people are following orders without questioning! Only dumb people are falling for their propaganda. And of course, have them not learn any other language! Because they could read real news in other countries (online) and who wants that?
If I were you, I would not come right now, if your family is supporting the crimes their "heroes" are committing every day in Iraq to common people who didn't want anything else than just live their lives. You will fight seriously. Or would you be comfortable to sit with them while they are ranting the hate-speaches of Brush Windball and other idiots? What would you say? "Yes dad" ?
Well, I at least would not. But I am not American, so maybe that is different then.
You might bring them some real reports about what really is going on. The killings of families everyday, the massacres in villages, the tortures, the abductions of people in Europe and CIA-prisons etc.
But maybe they would just blow you off and say "All lies planted in your head by the enemy" or so... You know how that goes.
When the first rumours about Birkenau, Auschwitz and Buchenwald came around, people simply did NOT BELIEVE what was said. They would not wrap their minds around what was going on there, and they did know their jewish neighbours had been gone and just disappeared. Still, they did not connect their braincells in the right way to combine what they knew for sure and what they heard.
Americans are exatly the same. They simply do not believe what their soldiers are doing to the Iraqis, and when you tell them, they are yelling at you "Communist", "Enemy" and worse.
You might either break up with your family for good over this, or you might pretend everything is just ok and keep politics out. Can you live with that?

I am a Scot who lived in America for a year.
I don't think Americans hear as much about the war as we do. Their news programmes and newspapers mainly talk about what's happening in the state or the country, rather than what's going on abroad.
Journalists who critise the war or the government are accused of being unpatriotic, whereas in the UK it is normal to criticise.
Try to cope when you visit home by discussing these issues with them but remember they have a right to their own opinion and they will not always agree with you.
If you are getting frustrated or angry with them, it's maybe best to avoid sensitive topics. After all, you should enjoy your trip home.

Most people are against this invasion....it is not a war. Cheney's company, Halliburton, is making a fortune in no-bid contracts. The administration was appointed, not legitimately elected. Voting fraud in Florida in 2000, and then in Ohio in 2004. They have scrapped the Bill of Rights. They're trying to shove their religious views down everyone's throat. Iraq had nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks. All the attackers were Saudis.

Remember, Baby Bush got into power again by the skin of his teeth, half of America didn't vote for him in the last phoney election, While the rest of the World were fed breakfast, dinner and tea including Tony Blair was fooled into believing that Saddam had Weapons of Mass Destruction, the Americans are more like to find Weapons of Masturbation, the way that they are carrying on.

Fortunately, many Americans are ashamed at what has happened in Iraq, which includes the deaths of thousands and thousands of people and what some are calling a situation nearing civil war.
Many people who support the war do so without thinking. They do not see the Iraqis as people like themselves, nor do they care to view the photos of babies with their heads ripped open by American bombs.
You should certainly continue to speak about your peaceful ideas, but you do not necessarily have to allow the disagreement with war supporters to ruin your visit. Rather than simply arguing, ask them questions that they should be asking themselves (Are people in Iraq not as human as the people in America? Are the motives and goals of this war clearly stated by those promoting it? Is the rapid increase in "terrorist" activity in Iraq an indication of the war's failure?)

Do not blame yourself or get angry, the media culture in America is more localised and reflect news that are relevant to the locals. British media are more wide spread, covering events from all around the world, therefore people are better informed about what goes on in Iraq and elsewhere.

I don't live in Iraq that is why I don't know what is going on over there.
Why assume all Americans are the same. Are all Iraqis the same ? Are all the English the same ? I think not...
You keep it civilized by acting like a respectable human being...so simple!

It is the insurgents who are doing the killing, they are trying to force their will on the Iraq's. American and British forces are still there to try and protect the elected government. If the insurgents were to leave then and the bombing stop then the troops would leave. You should study the history of this war and the reason why it happened before you condemn your country

Try to avoid politics altogether if you want to keep things civilized.
Many Americans have an unrealistic picture of the war and the world because our media is absolute dog sh*t, lies all the time, downplays important events and focuses on whatever sensational crap the government feeds it.
