The Exorcist, easily the scariest film I've ever seen, followed closely by Salem's Lot with David Soul. Oh, and I love the Halloween movies too.

Texas Chain Saw Massacre, the original one. Our local cinema was showing old cult films so I went with an ex boyfriend. I thought I was going to have a panic attack during the film. I couldn't sit still and read the popcorn packet over and over again. Glad I saw it though because the ending is such an adrenalin rush when the girl escapes. What a warped film!
Haven't seen it and won't but Hostel is meant to be horrible.

I went to see Texas Chainsaw Massacre when it first came out.
The scariest film I'd seen before that was a Dracula film with Christopher Lee or Hammer House of Horrors on TV. I have NEVER EVER been so scared!!!!
Nearly sh*t myself.

I saw Nightmare on Elm street when I was 10 and it scared the hell out of me. Years later and I just thought it was a bit silly.
The original Blair Witch project was the only film that has really scared me as an adult, although I still get cold shivers when watching the shining.

Like a lot of others who have answered i remember Salems Lot scaring me when i was younger, especially the bit where the guy is in the cell and you suddenly get a glimpse of the vampire. The original Texas chainsaw massacre disturbed me the most, and i watched that when i was 32. Don't bother with the remake just watch the original on your own, late at night, with the lights off.

The films listed by other answerers ... I think they are scary though haven't watch them. Ermm, I have to say the latest one since I am only 17 and seldom watch horror/thriller movies. Final Destination 3 is really gruesome, but I heard that the first 2 instalments are even bone-chilling and shocking.
