Anything small like that would be fine. At the pet store they should have a sign that says if the fish are friendly or agressive (Or ask the person). Community tanks should be kept with only friendly fish and try to stay away from the semi-agressive ones. Guppies are fun if you get them in pairs and then you can have little guppy babies sometimes with different colors than their parents. Don't load up the tank too much though, I think the general rule is an inch of fish per gallon. Let me know if you have any questions.

I have answered questions like this a few times before. You fail to say what size tank you have set up and what equipment you are using. I will presume that you have the standard tropical fish tank equipment (Filter, heater, air supply to aerate the water)

You also fail to say whether or not you want to have a community tank where many different species can live together quite happily.

I guess that since you mention guppies and neons you intend to have a community tank. Here are some fish that will live in the community tank without too much in fighting.

Neon Tetra, Cardinal Tetra, Serpae Tetra, Black Phantom Tetra, Rummy Nosed Tetra, Bleeding Heart Tetra, Black Widow Tetra, Glolight Tera, Black line Tetra, White Cloud Mountain Minnow, Zebra Danio, Tiger Barbs (but not if you have guppies as they will eat the fancy tails of the guppies), Red Tailed Black Shark (can be aggressive), Platies (various varieties) Swordtails (various varieties) Guppies (can be difficult to keep but never at the same time as Tiger Barbs), Mollies. This should be enough to keep you and you boyfriend happy for a while.

Based on a 24 inch (60cms) X 12 inch (30 cms) X 12 inch (30 cms) You can have approximately 29 fish in a tank of this size. But here is the golden rule: You must have 6 inches (15cms ) of swimming space per inch of fish. For example if a fish measures 2 inches long from nose to tail then you must allow that fish to have 12 inches of swimming space. You must also remember that the fish that you buy are likely to be young and haven't stopped growing.

In short the number of fish is governed by the size of fish.

Sounds you want a community tank. Neons and guppies are good hardy fish and guppies will breed freely unlike most other fish that need specific conditions, temperature etc. Also consider Cardinal tetras, the look like neons but have a full red stripe on their bellies. Mollies, Black Widows (trust me, their is such a fish), scissortails and Tiger barbs (although seemingly aggressive but actually playful) are good choices for the beginner. After a couple of weeks you will start to get algae growing, the best fish to deal with this problem is a Plecostomus which will eat it.

But first make sure your tank is set up properly then introduce plants. get advice from a local pet shop, preferably someone who keeps them at home and not one of these "pet supermarkets", trust me they're to impersonal and their knowledge can be basic. Good Luck and enjoy : )

It depends how big your fish tank is and how many fish you want/can have in there. Guppies are fine if you don't mind them breeding constantly. Neons - all varieties, Platys are nice fish especially the Sunset Corals, swordtails, scissorfish, loaches, gold fish. You can't have clown fish in trpoical as they require marine water.

You can also add an assortment of plants purchased from the pet shop and some ornaments or rocks.

the fish you mentioned are fine together with other fish ,
A bottom feeder ,tank cleaner fish like a loach is good
maybe ,some Platte's too ( they are peaceful Hardy fish)
silver or golden gurami are larger ,but also peacefully with other fish.
)do not be tempted to over stock
Approximately one fish per gallon of water is ideal ,

NOTE:
Guppies and platy produce ,live fry ( babies) and some will survive , so you will find, some additional, little strangers in your tank ( It is great to watch them grow though

and if you can plant a few grasses and aquarium weeds ,
not only will it add interest of the tank
and provide some shelter for the tiny baby baby fish, till they are too large to be eaten, by their parents and any other fish , who fancies a live snack .
.

Enjoy your tank

Go for social and shoaling fish if you want a nice display. Avoid aggressors, they'll upset the balance and you'll have fish dying on you.

Guppies are great but they tend to eat the young of breeders, Neons are quiet and shoal. A male and female Black Molly are good breeders as are Clown Loach and Platys.

Neon Dart fish are usually quite nice to look at, but their lifespan compared to other fish isnt brilliant. If you want something really active I'd reconmmend Japanese fighting fish. or carp (for bait)
