Why is Russia not considered an Asian country?

Geographically speaking, the nation of Russia occupies a large portion of the Asian continent. So, why are Russians considered to be European rather than Asian?

From my understanding it is due to racial/genetic traits. Most of the population in Russia have traditionally been of Caucasian stock and for a long time that was an understood/implied division of the world. Another reason could be that Asia, which used to be called The Orient was commonly referred to as the Far East. Which, in the medieval period, was considered to be barbaric & almost mythical in origin. Russia was just considered to be in the north and really not understood to be all that big.
Mind you all this has been inferred in my studies, no one has ever come straight out and said thi, so I'm sorry if this offends you. .
