It bothers me to no end when those electronic construction signs say 'thru' when 'through' would fit (they're 7 characters wide). Maybe it's hard to enter words into them, in which case I might understand, but if you're going through the trouble to alert people, you should try a little harder. I think this is part of the reason why kids can't spell nowadays.

Yes, and it is terrible. I am German, now living in the US and teaching my native language to Americans, mostly adults.

Several times it happened already that they felt completely ok with cutting off necessary parts of english words, like though, through, neighbours etc.
I have even seen the word "tonite" already, and I feel my toenails rolling up by that...

Now, most of these terms are really coming from germanic words, and the fact that you don't say the words in their correct way anymore makes some people think they can get rid of the (now) silent letters.
But as a liguist who is hooked on history that hurts me almost physically. When you start writing nite instead of night (for example) you are cutting off your historic roots.

There is of course a reason that these letters are there, they have been pronounced long time ago, and several of the other germanic languages are still using them. Just that we Germans are writing "ch" to express that sound, english used to write the same sound as "gh". It is the snoring-type of sound made in your throat. Your language has lost that long ago, same as scandinavians. But Germans and Dutch still speak that way, and the "gh" in english words is only a local variety of our "ch".

When Americans now try to get rid of that all, it makes me even more like them less, because they have no sense for history and where they came from, or where their language came from.

But you know what: you will find people here who think Kennedy is spelled "Kenite", and he was "pesedent" (Yes!) around 1990, then you know what is going on in your country.

My husband and his brothers have been sent to private schools by their parents, and while I first thought that was weird, I now understand why. They are very well educated in all possible aspects. Seems your public schools don't deliver that anymore.

FUZZY training.they're taught in case you spell it like it sounds it extremely is close adequate.the suitable training gadget that the educators in the present day desire us to have have been dreamed up as a miles less complicated way of having their factor accross, however the priority is they made it too vauge and the scholars observed the err of their procedures and run with it to the factor they abbreviate words spell words the way they sound and talk in a slang sort that justifies those spellings.
