Yes you can... You've gotta have Mozilla Firefox with the VideoDownloader plug in...

The format of the file would be .flv.

The .flv file can then be converted to mpg, avi or even mp3 but if you're really picky about sound, youtube is not the best place to get music... pretty low bitrate and mono sound...

As for free and legal music... pretty hard... most of the free music would be released by not so famous singers... try www.mp3.com...

For free music, why not try browsing myspace? There are thousands of unsigned bands there - you could have the honour of saying that you were listening to such-and-such before they were famous....
