do you have a older GM car with push button (or lever) light switch?
if so, this is a common problem, and the problem is NOT at the headlight. it is the switch that has a short. you can pull this out and check the connections, but this might ruin the stop thingy that keeps it in the dash, so it will be forever loose...just get a new switch. you could go to auto store or junkyard, but junk is usually just that, especially with electrical.

I have had this happen to headlights before, but it was just one light at a time, never both at the same time. Not long after it started that the bulb blowed. If you have the older style seal beam lights try unpluging the wires on the back then plug them back on this may or may not help.

some autos have switches that require you to push the turn sign (multi-function change) lever forward somewhat of pulling it in the direction of you (flash-to-pass) to turn on the extreme beams. some autos have some f*%ked up switches that make no experience besides (like Peugeot that has 4 attainable positions). it is attainable which you will could replace the change, yet you're able to have somebody with some vehicle wiring journey do it for cover. you may steer clear of having the air bag installation by using no longer messing with its wiring and by using no longer hitting a wall jointly as installation the change. in case you intend on doing greater paintings in this vehicle your self (or in the experience that your father is doing the paintings) you may placed money right into a good restoration instruction manual. Haynes makes good ones for persons who don't have plenty historic past (they have better photos frequently), so good success with it.

I think your car's switch to the headlamps is faulty because the
contact is not working when you switch it on, but when you
tap it gently, the headlamps is on. This means to say that you
have physically 'shaken' the contact points into activation by
light tapping.
You should get it replaced as soon as possible. Besides, you
cannot depend on light tapping every time you want to turn on
the headlamps. Very soon it may not work at all.

REACH BEHIND THE LAMP AND REMOVE THE ELECTRICAL PLUG IN (PIGTAIL)
CLEAN THE TERMINAL CONNECTIONS ON THE HARNESS AS WELL AS ON THE BULB ITSELF AND RECONNECT
USUALLY THEY GET DIRTY OR LOOSE
