the table was whitewashed. can anyone tell me what kind of paint is used to whitewash a good solid piece of wood? either that or how to remove water stains from a very light wood? as i live in mexico home remedies are more useful as i don't have access to many products.

If there are water rings, I would try something called blush eliminator first (available at Woodworker's Supply stores, or at www.touchupsolutions.com). It is a blend of solvents identical to lacquer but without the solids--so all it does is melt the finish, allow it to flow back out, and evaporate. If this does not work, or if the wood has oxidized over time, the only thing you can do is strip the finish and begin again.

You might try murphy oil soap. You can get it at wal-mart.

best way is to sand it all down...and re-stain or finish

I THINK FORNBY'S HAS A WIPE ON - WIPE OFF PRODUCT, PROBABLY AVAILABLE @ HOME DEPOT - LOWES.
