I was told this is an old wive's tale. However, my Mom refused to turn the heat on last week and it was in the 40's and I was freezing! Lo and behold, I have a nasty cold this week. I know its unhealthy to keep the heat high but when it's very cold and not on, can't that make you sick?

No, colds are viruses. Being cold will not give you a virus. Viruses are attributed to the cold due to seasons. When fall comes around people are huddled into closer places around eachother and spread viruses faster.
