The engine will turn over and fire for a few seconds. If I hit the gas it stops. If I just let it idle as soon as it gets to idle speed is stops. I have changed the fuel filter and the spark plugs. The fuel pump is working. The distributor is clean and turns like it should. The alternator is working. I don't know what else to try.

I changed the ignition coil. I was also able to get it to run for about 5 minutes last night. I took the air filter off and propped open the trap door to the lower hose into the engine. After it started it idled erratically. I pulled the prop and replaced the air filter after 3 or 4 minutes and it died a minute later.

Is it carburated? If so I would say that is where your problem is. Sounds like flooding or fuel starvation. Both common problems with a worn carburetor. Rebuild kits are cheap and it is not a hard thing to do. Just watch where all the little parts got, keep it clean, and label your vacuum lines.

If your truck use carburator ,you should check the choke system. When engine cold choke plate will be close after you pump gas pedal twice ,when car start choke full off will pull it open lightly ,until engine warm up choke plate will be wide open .You should get a repair manual for that truckl to read more detail how to adjut it.
