reality? Polls reflect what citizens think and their are tons of polls out there. Polls also fluctuate frequently. Or would you prefer a president who does not guide and follow polls but instead follows what he/she beleives in?

Polls are nothing! There just estimated guesses that prove wrong about 96% of the time! Besides...believing in yourself is the sign of a strong leader....it is the sign of power....of strong self belief. Personally, I would lean to the stonger of the two presidents. Expecally in these times.

I think its funny! The whole situation is sad! Bush was in office during the worst attack on US soil. He had to make some tough decisions and he did. So all of a sudden Bush is God, not expected to make mistakes! No matter who was in office we would be in the same situation, maybe worse. I do not envy the president! He is in a position that I would never want to take on! Its easy for us to sit here and analyze every decision that Bush has made after the fact. It has always happened, look at history. He has access to information that we have never seen or will ever see. I do not agree with everything Bush has done! I can easily say that because I can sit here and look at the decisions he has made! Its hard to say what anyone would have done with the information he had at the time and the decisions he had to make right then and there. So because Bush is in office lets get back to president bashing. Seems like the only thing we are good at!

All Presidents follow polls. Bush is no different It is most seen before elections. Why do you think GW Bush declassified the "intelligence" report on Iraq? You think he did that for what he believes in? Give me a break. He has refused to declassify many "Intel" reports in the past. In California where bush is now playing before a paid crowd again, bush only has a 27 percent Approval of his Job performance. A full 62 percent dis approve of Bush. Take some time and become more informed on issues. Study SPC. That's a start.

making decisions based on polls is not right, however, polls are an important tool to gauge how the american people feel, and elections ARE popularity contests. Caring what the people of the US think during election time ONLY is equally not right. In Bush's case, he is very out of touch of what the people want, and like ot or not, we pay his paycheck, and deserve to be represented, and our questions answered. Especially when the constitution and everything this country was founded on are at such high risk. I do not vote to serve my government, I vote for the government to serve me, regardless of what Bush and Bush alone thinks is best for this country...

BTW, does Bush KNOW what the reality is? Because reality is just as subjective (if not more so) than polls are.

I would prefer a president that is responsive to the people, one way to do this is by polls. I think that people in Washington loose perspective when they get there, we elect these people to represent us, not the special interest. I think that polls can be used as a guide line. I will take for an instance that if you are anti abortion and a majority of your Constituency isn't then you should represent their interest as opposed to your own. We the American people have the final say. If the Representative does not do as I wish him to then I can vote against him. (Joe Lieberman) d Conn. (Joe Swartz) r Michigan are good examples.

obviously polls count because if they dip too low the party will get after the president and nag him to death. However, a good president must make the right decisions based on the facts and how he feels about them. Polls must be given a back seat, but they are always there. Being president is a lousy job and I wouldn't take it for millions of dollars and a personal psychiatrist.

Why the either/or ?
I would rather have a President who makes decisions based on ALL relevant information, including polls of voter attitudes.

A self-contained Presidency, in which the country relies on seat-of-the pants 'deciding' is what got us in the mess in Iraq.

But I think stalling decisions just before elections to conceal government actions from voters is the worst misuse of polls there is.

If the President believed the same things as the American public, and based his decisions on that, the polls wouldn't have dropped.

Bush does both. For example, he did not replace Rumsfeld either right before or right after the 04 election because he thought it would hurt him in the polls. Then he sticks with the same, failing policies. Bush is the worst of both worlds!

Reality. Definitely. Most people are ignorant, and the president has access to the most information.
