I agree with H.P Lovecraft if you like Poe you'll like Lovecraft. Particularly good ones ;The Dunwich Horror, The Call of Cthulhu, and The Rats in The Walls.
For more modern stuff, have you tried James Herbert? I don't like Dean Koontz either, but James Herbert is not gory more spooky and creepy. And good plot twists. I'd recommend The Magic Cottage and Moon to start.
I also like Clive Barker, I would recommend his books too!

I just finished a book called "The Mystery of a Hansom Cab," by Fergus Hume. I haven't read a lot of thriller/mystery books so I don't know how well it compares to what you've read before, but I enjoyed reading it. I'm not even sure if it's in the genre you want.
Anyway. It's bit old-fashioned ( I hate it when writers digress on purpose.) but still pretty ok.
Right now, I'm reading "Black Juice," by Margo Lanagan. It's a collection of short stories. I've just finished the 3rd story, so I can't tell you much about it. It's pretty dark. Not sure if it's the kind of book you're looking for. Read up on it and see.

H.P. Lovecraft for sure... lots of books to choose from there.
Bram Stoker's Dracula is great.
And a newer author I discovered through a friend (if you like vampires and werewolves) is
Blood Donor by Michelle Clay. ( I'm about to start the second, Blood Lust. SO far so good. )

Clive Barker's "Books of Blood;" a collection of short stories that make Stephen King seem like Mother Goose by comparison.

Falling more under the Thriller category...J. A. Konrath's books feature some super creepy serial killer types. "Whiskey Sour" is the first. Check out http://www.cincinnatilibrary.org/booklists/ for suggestions. They have a horror/supernatural category.

I was home alone one night reading Bram Stoker's "Dracula". Then my mom came home. I was so engrossed with the book that I didn't hear her come in and when she came into the livingroom, I screamed. So when the movie came out, my sister had to see how scary it was. But the book is still more scary to me.
