I have a garden office at end of 100 ft garden. Can I just run a normal phone extension lead, or should I get a special lead, similar to armoured cable used for the electric feed. Do BT offer such a service, I asked but she didnt seem to know what she was talking about!l

A DECT cordless phone should work ok at that distance, but if you MUST have a wired connection then you have to use an external grade phone cable, usually black, if its above ground. If you neen to bury it, it will have to be an armoured type of cable. Use 3 pair cable minimum. Connect to your master sockect NTL5. You CANNOT use an extension lead. BT could probably do it for you but will charge a small fortune. Find a local electrician, who does phone points, not all do.

You need to use the overhead cable which has tension wires in it. The house cable is not self supporting.

BT will do this for you, a standard house extension is about £65 you might find this about the same

Or, you could be clever and use an IP phone over powerline sockets...if you've got broadband or a router that is.

If it is just for making and recieving phone calls, then I suggest that you buy a DECT phone, which will give you a wireless solution.

If it is for broadband as well, then I would firstly see if you can get a wi-fi connection from your house to your office... this again will give you a wireless solution and work alongside the DECT solution.

Otherwise, BT will I am sure install "additonal" sockets but at what cost I am unclear - suggest you look at bt.com/pricing and search their price list. If the phone is not registered as a business line then they may be reluctant to install it, but then I am sure they will install it. Suggest you call 0800 389 4848.

Otherwise just run an extension cable down the garden, I would imagine it will be fine...

Cheers...

Reverse Phone Number Look Up Services

If you are thinking of burying a cable, hosepipe is not a good idea as it will simply crush. You might get away with blue coiled water pipe. If you can afford it, get Openreach in to do it properly and they will supply proper grey telecoms duct and the correct cable. (Can get the proper cable from an electrical wholesaler such as TLC). This is grease filled cable that prevents ingress of water along the cable. You must not run more than 1 metre of this inside due to fire hazard so best to join to normal phone cable just inside at each end.

If phoning your phone provider, ask them to raise a time related charges order and they will send an engineer who will survey. Costs will then be per hour.

Hope this helps.

You can use a normal extension lead but it will need some protection from the elements (see if you can get some cheap tubing). The only thing which will happen if you cut through it when gardening is your phone won't work.

My nephew uses a device which he bought in Maplins.
It is like an overgrown 13 amp plug with a teleohone plug-in tail.
It is plugged into the mains, and into a convient phone socket.
In the shed there is a "slave" slightly smaller, you just plug in your telephone /fax or dial-up and hey presto everything works.
Apparently the signal "Piggy-backs" on the cabling in the house using encoded FM signals and can reach 100 metres.
Cost about £50
FRIDAY 10am I have just found out the details..........

reverse phone number search compiles hundreds of millions of phone book records to help locate the owner's name, location, time zone, email and other public information.

Use a reverse phone lookup to:
Get the identity of an unknown caller.
Identify an area code.
Recall the name of a person whose number you wrote down.
Identify an unfamiliar phone number that shows up on your bill.
