No that is not true. However, they will bite. During mating the female mantid will bite the head off of the male at the end of the mating process.

Actually, my little girl caught one yesterday and I held it for her. I don't see how a praying mantis can have the strength to cut a human finger off. Perhaps this comes from the fact that they can and do rip bugs apart. However, bugs are much smaller.

See this link for a praying mantis killing a hummingbird! I'd keep my fingers away from it if I were you, looks like it could pierce a human finger just as easily, but not cut it off.

I also heard they can jump into your nose, but untill I see one actually crawl into somebodies nose, I aint believin that. They are wierd creatures alright, (their mating habits are wierder than wierd, head bites and all), but they dont and cant chop peoples fingers off.
