Depends on what level you're playing at, but in general:

- you want to attack your opponent's weakness (this may require slight adjustments or deviation from your regular game). you must also observe how the person is playing throughout the course of the match and adapt.
- play important points smartly. in tennis you don't have to win every point but U must capitalize on game/break points. go for your shots at 40-00, 40-15 and play conservative when U need to.
- at more advance levels, make opponent play YOUR game/pace by dictating play early.

Tennis is a mental game. Always be willing to fight and giving it all every point, even if you are down 0-6 0-5, triple match point.

That is what seperates the pros from the beginners, the ability to continue fighting!

Doesn't matter what level you are, you will have the upper hand if you are the one making the least mistakes...
Get the ball over the net and in the court one more time than your opponent every time, any way possible and you'll win more points than him/her.

I think the idea is to score more winning points than your opponent.

Play better than the other guy. That's what Agassi used to say. "You don't have to be good, you just have to be better than the guy on the other side of the net."
