Just ask a question concerning cigarettes and you get so many different answers it has to be confusing. I will get to the point. I am 60 years old. I have smoked since I was 14 years old. I loved smoking, I enjoyed every drag off my cigarette. I smoked at least a pack a day. I said I would never quit, I enjoyed it too much. The last year has been a living nightmare for me. I have always been very active and busy. I have quit smoking now and here is what made me do it and I don't crave them any longer. I am on oxygen 24 hours per day. I take breathing treatments 4-5 times per day. I am on pills and more pills. I cannot breathe without the oxygen. I have severe anxiety and depression.

I had to go on long term disability because I cannot do my job. I cannot work in my garden. I cannot go for a walk. If I overdo I end up in bed for a day or back in the hospital.

This will not affect you until it happens to you. My daughter smokes and she can't quit. It is a very powerful drug. But, HONESTLY IF I HAD KNOWN WHAT MY LIFE WOULD BE, I WOULD HAVE QUIT. I never even think of a cigarette now, I am too busy trying to breathe.....................

Willpower, thats the one and only way of guaranteeing to stop. The other things like chewing gum and patches etc will help, but if you dont want to then youll just keep starting again.

Let everyone know that youve quit so (if theyre decent people!) they wont tempt you by offering you a cig or putting you in a diff situation. Being at the pub for example will be diff to start with because of the atmosphere.

Oh, also, concentrate on a hobby or something, like a lot more than you would usually, as this will help distract you from any cravings. Good luck!

I went cold turkey cos i think sum of these gums & patches r a waste of time. they r expensive & contain nicotine so you may as well just have a cig.
I found I ate alot so to prevent putting on a ton of weight I sucked on tick tacs & polo mints each time I had a craving. I also ate frozen grapes as I was getting a sweet tooth & they are like eating boiled sweets.
If you can put up with not having one for 2 weeks you have done it cos apparently it takes that long for the nicotine to leave your system.
Keep busy too. You wont think about the craving so much.
good luck

The best way "doctors advice" is to cut down gradually over a period of months, e.g if you have your first cigarette in the morning at, say 8am, the next moring have your first cigarette at 8.20am, do this for a few mornings so that your craving gradually weakens. Then the following mornings, have your firat cigarette at 8. 40am, continue to do this for a few weeks, always lighting up your first cigarette 20 minutes later every couple of days. As the weeks continue, you'll find that the craving get weaker and weaker. In about a months time, you'll find that your craving has diminished, and that you'll be lighting up your first cigarette, say mid morning, just continue this simple process, and in the coming months, you find that the craving for lighting up gradually gets weaker and weaker until you reach the point, that you will find that you can do without lighting up until midday, so on and so forth, good luck.

pure will power my friend, i gave up 10 months ago just using Wrigley's extra chewing gum and i am still off them. I had a mate that i go to the pub quite often give up at the same time so we had a wager of £100 (1st person to light up looses). So that helps cause i don't have £100 to lose! But then again we did help each other when needed! Cause we both wanted to pack it in! GOOD LUCK!!!!!

Hi

What i did, and i smoked 20-40 a day, was put the money in a jar and tell everyone (because if you screwed up, you embarrassed yourself) how much you'd saved. when it gets to 3 figures, you then realise how much you wasted over a matter of weeks, then it will put you off for life. After a short while, you will be able to taste food and smell things. the main thing you will smell is the cabbage breath of the idiots who do smoke.

All the very best of luck mate. Do us proud.

I don't think there's any magic cure (maybe hypnosis) it really requires willpower and diversion tactics.

I found having a pen in my hand help and drinking more gave me something else to do. Just try to keep busy and for the first couple of weeks, away from smoky places - it would just be too hard to resist.

The NHS run a Stop Smoking clinic that is meant to be good but was after I gave up!

If you get a reply that really works, please lemme know, because I have tried it all, and I honestly think that the only way you can really quit is if you truly want too. The only times I have quit fully, is when I was pregnant with my children, I did not cheat once until after the birth, then like an idiot I went right back to it. I curse the day I ever started, cigs are the devil! Good Luck!
