Shouldn't we really look to a few of the African countries where it is thought that modern civilisation originated? These countries are steeped in history and culture and produce many outstanding athletes. Unfortunately they have been negatively influenced by Colonisation which has left as its legacy, poverty and suppressed populations. Nonetheless we take for granted a massive consumption of 3rd world products without ever questioning their origin or processes to produce them. It is easy as colonists to choose to ignore these countries.

in this day and age everywhere is shite but if you look at history and what a country has given to the world then it is without doubt the United Kingdom.
We once ruled most of the world - america would not be the america it is today if it were not for the UK. We invented nearly everything that got anyone anywhere, we've had most of the world most influencial industrialists - we started and led the industrial revolution - we invented the jet engine that shrunk the world a hundred fold (americans always think they invented that but they didnt!) - we own the most used language - we have the most far reaching empire - we dont have President Bush running our country - we make the fastest race cars in the world and always have - we won two world wars contrary to what the americans think (yes they were there when we won but thanks for coming along at the last minute) - we invented the harrier jump jet 40 years before the yanks could get their jump jet off the ground and the harrier is still superior in the air - we invented concorde nearly 40 years ago too (the program director at NASA in 1967 said concorde was more of an achievement than putting a man on the moon - its true) - we currently have one of the most stable economies in the world - although people like to grumble the NHS is an amazing machine thank god we dont have to rely on health insurance like other western countries - we invented rugby THE ONLY SPORT and we dont wear pads when we play it like the other queer games played.
RULE BRITANIA

Australia.
Its only involvement in World Wars has been due to its relationship with England, its a continent and the largest island in the world. Its diverse in both its enviroment (flora, fauna, landscape) and people(largely multicultural). Its the size of Europe yet only one language is spoken. Australians are described as some of the most friendly people in the world. Its also usually in the Top 5 as a tourist destination.

The Isle of Man, it has the oldest continuous democratic government, has never fought a war (which is a good thing!), and does not even have an army. Crime is low, education good, and due to low taxes is good for finance. Unfortunately the flip side is that most of its inhabltants are a tad inbred, and its bloody boring as hell.

Okay Brits, you guys are a little big for your britches. And quit talking about WW2 unless you like being reminded that you'd be speaking German right now if it weren't for the United States.
That said, China is the greatest nation in history. The Chinese have contributed more to the fields of technology, language, weaponry, art, education, and religion than all of Europe combined.

Very difficult to answer.
Italy or Britain for inventions, literature and general science advances. Possibly the US for greatest modern day opportuities in life generally. Best food is the French, best wine would have to be french too (but i prefer new world).
Finest navy ever was the old British, finest army ever was the Germans in WWII, finest airforce is the US at the moment.

It's got to be Iraq, doesn't it? He he. What a lovely place. Home to Saddam, pointless wars, gassings, rapes and beatings. Now home to Islamic terrorist nutcases blowing the cr*p out of the Americans and the local population. Other than that, it's fine!
