Truman fired MacArthur because he realized the man was totally out of his head! MacArthur wanted to drop atom bombs all over China and Japan, so much that it probably would have impacted the rest of the world.
Truman's attack of conscious might have happened because of the letter the group of scientists wrote to him about the atom bomb, pleading with him to not use it.
I think that had a lot to do with it. At the very least, I'm glad Truman got rid of MacArthur before too much damage was done.

Yes, and no.

The general was right in his opinions to win the war. He should have been allowed to fight it the right way. Because of Truman, we have to deal with North Korea and China today.

However, our constitution sets a civilian (the President) as the head of the military. This is crucial to prevent the military from becoming political and launching a coup. The chain of command must be followed, and he was wrong to be insubordinate to Truman.

Truman was wrong to stop MacArthur from winning the war, but right to remove him when he was subordinate.

It was nothing more than a case of insubordination. I deeply respect both men. But we wouldn't be dealing with North Korea today if Truman let MacArthur do his thing.

Absolutely...After ignoring numerous requests, and then orders from the Commander in Chief in regard to his media comments, his "nowhere to turn but God" comment, Truman had no choice but to fire him publicly. "quiet retirement" was the first option given to him, but MacArthur also refused that.
