12 step program

(I like the idea of never being more than 12 steps away from the alcohol, but that's not going to help you :)

You can talk with your doctor for alternatives. If your partner is serious about it he might consider taking a medication called "antabuse" or disulfiram. This medicine inhibits one of his body enzymes that metabolises alcohol and if he drinks alcohol then he would get quite sick! However, it relies on him being serious about it and taking the medication.

If he has been drinking over a long period of time, he should see his doctor to help in get over the need for a drink, I know there are pills he can take, that can make him feel sick if he touches alcohol, but he needs to be able to help himself and face up to the fact that he has a problem, not something you can do for him, but you can give him your full support.

Tell him NOT to believe the hype drinking alcohol will NOT make him look big cool hard or clever. They will have his Cash and he will have there overall poor health if he continues to drink. DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE. Drink sucks.

If hes drinking excessively he may be under stress, try to occupy him in other things, it will take time but be patient it will happen.

If he goes to his GP they will be able to refer him to an alcohol councellor. This will be totally confidential so there will be no reason for anyone to find out unless he tells them himself.

It's not your job to help him. He has to help himself. You need to back off and let him do it. He can find an AA meeting just about anyplace. They are in the phone book. In the meantime, you need to work on you. and let him work his own problem.
