Well, I'm 59 and have just finished a course of 8 lessons at my local swimming baths (£36 for the 8 lessons) and yesterday I did two lengths of the 25 metre pool without putting my foot down once. What a triumph!
I just wish I had done this years ago. If only you knew of the holidays which have been ruined for me because I couldn't swim.
Go ahead and get some lessons. The instructor is in the water with the class, so no need to be scared.
Good luck! You'll never regret it.

Yup, go to YMCA; they offer swimming classes.
In NYC, Y's have level 1, 2 and 3 swimming classes. Eight weeks per each level. It's cheap. Around $130. It's fun too.

Try asking at your local swimming pool. They are probably the best people to ask.

Another option is to ask at the local library. Where I live they have a list of local organisations and groups so will probably be able to help you.
