Well I would need to know the size of the tank and what it is made of, like glass, plastic, wood, and how deep it is and how long it is...
By the way, I hope your tank is not plastic, because plastic will melt at higher temperatures of heat lamps...
You really only need to heat up one end so your animal will have a place to go to warm up...
The reason being that you need a heat pad on the bottom and a heat lamp on top is because at night when they sleep, they may sleep on the heat pad and not get any heat from the lamp if you have it turned off like you should...
Lizards and snakes do not need light 24 hours a day...
They will sleep at night so no light is needed then...
Also make sure the heat sources are located where the animal cannot touch the heat so it wont get burned...
They must be located outside the glass enclosure and a pad can easily be duck taped to a glass tank bottom...
As for your top, you can buy mesh tops that fit your tank at your pet store...
They have openings that allow air and light in but keep it at a good distance so your pet wont burn...
He also needs an end of the tank where if he is too hot, he can go get in the shade and cool off...
He needs water and light that is not heat related..
A UV light to resemble daylight only...
They never give off heat...
All reptile bulbs are energy efficient and use a small amount of electricity and take a long time to burn out...
I have 2 tanks of glass with my bearded dragons in them...
Also if this is what you are doing, keep lizards apart or they will fight if male...
Make sure your animal has the kind of water bowl he cannot knock over and spill, so make sure it is heavy...

I am an assistant manager for a pet store. Alot of times you can use heating pads under one side of the tank. Reptiles need a place in there environment to get warm and another side to cool off. So it really depends on the size of the tank and the type of reptile. Heat bulbs are great too as long as you have a mesh top for your tank. Glass tops don't let the heat in properly and if you put the lamp inside the tank many times the animal can burn itslef.

Heat emitters are good if you need no light but for a large tank its hard to find a bulb with low light that has enough watts.Well where I live it is. Go to "bigappleherp.com" and you can find 150 watt night lights, its like moon light would be so you can leave it on all the time. you don't see it during the day and you still give the snakes a bit of light at night. Not enough to keep you up at night if the cage is in your room.

Firstly they give off loads of heat which is why they need to be controlled by a thermostat and must be caged so that the snake cant get at it, If you don't want a heat source that gives off light you cant get a ceramic heating element which goes into a normal light fitting but this also needs a pulse proportional thermostat and cage,as for using alot of energy I have 5 lights on for 14 hours off the day and because they are on thermostats they are never on at full brightness so don't use much electricity at all,I also use heat mats but again they need to be on a mat stat so that they don't get to hot.

Heat mats are pretty good too, low voltage, various sizes. If you go down the bulb route, make sure they can't reach it, as my snake burnt itself on the hot bulb!

First of all ,what kind of retile? Don't ask a pet store, they usually don't know what is best for reptiles. Go to www.anapsid.org. This is one of the best care information sheets I have evr seen. I've owned iguanas for 14 yrs now.
