This is where the difference between Steve Bruce and Martin O'Neill is. He changed the performance of the whole Villa team with the same set of players owned by O'Leary except Petrov. How he did that? Due to his excellent man management skills. He knows how to get the best out of the players. O'Leary knew nothing. Sutton was his main striker in Celtic and they went on to become UEFA CUp runner-up. Trust me, Martin O'Neill knows much more than me, you, Steve Bruce or any other average Managers for that matter.

O’Neill is able to sign Sutton outside the transfer window because the player is a free agent after leaving Birmingham following an ill-fated four-month spell there.

This, added with their lack of strikers at the moment pushed him to sign him, even though Sutton was thinking about quitting football altogether.

I don’t think you have to worry. As much as I don’t like the man for the way he walked out on my club, Leicester City, I have no doubt Martin O’Neill will get the best out of Chris Sutton. I thought the exact same when O’Neill signed Ian Marshall for us but he prolonged his career and turned him into a better player. Martin O’Neill will certainly be able to get more out of any player than Steve Bruce ever could. He may make the odd mistake along the way but not much of what Martin O’Neill does for Villa will prove to be wrong.
