On a historical timeline, the information age (current generation) was preceded by the space age, preceded by the industrial age, again preceded by the agricultural age. The "ages" are named for the most significant, lasting event(s) in regards to the effect upon humankind over time.

For example, the agricultural age centered around farming. I believe farming and livestock became widespread for us humans about 8000 BC. All of the ages are pretty self explanatory, including the "information age".

The information age partly came to be due to the advent of mainstream hightech devices such as the personal computer. IBM sold its mainframe computer to corporations and government during the 1950s. As a result, society starting becoming dependent on the use of computerized technology to help make their lives easier. In the early eighties, the personal computer went mainstream. Then, the mainframe technology of yesteryear was sitting in people's livingrooms. By the early '90s it was possible to use the revised ARPANET backbone developed by the US military during the 1960s to surf the Internet. And as they say, the rest was history. It's entirely possible to thoroughly research and obtain almost every imagineable piece of information that you can think of.

The Internet is really only a part of what completely defines our current information age. It could be argued that the invention of Gutenberg's printing press in 1453 had just as much impact regarding our access to information as the Internet. Mass media, ie., T.V. newspaper, magazine, books. W3, etc. all converge in a way that makes information available to all but the most destitute 24/7, hence the name, "information age".
