government grants?

how do i go about trying to get a government grant? when i try to find out how to do this on the computer all i get are ads to buy a cd. is there someone out there who has gotten one? i would like to know in detail how to do this. i have been on grants.gov and i find it confusing. i am looking for downpayment assistance grants. can anyone help me with a more easily understandable way? thanks.

First you have to do a grant search for what you are seeking to get a grant for- If the government is looking for someone it will be listed.
Then you have to write a grant proposal, explaining why you feel you would be the best person to receive this grant money!

You can go to the Catalog of Federal Domestic Assistance (CFDA) http://www.cfda.gov and Grants.gov http://www.grants.gov - these are two FREE sites created by the federal government to provide transparency and information on grants. Browse through the CFDA listings and see if you can find any grant that would support your purposes. You look for available grants at CFDA, and once you find what grants you may qualify, you apply for it at Grants.gov

Even if you buy books on "how to get grants" or list that supposedly has information on grants -- all of them are mere rehash of what CFDA has, albeit packaged differently.

If you're looking for home downpayment grants, the Housing and Urban Development in their Grants Available page makes it clear that they do not provide grants to individuals -- hence no grants for a person to buy a home http://www.hud.gov/grants/index.cfm

Note though that these grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments. Individuals especially for personal purposes are not eligible for federal grants.
