I'm 56 years old, and I am seriously considering the impact on my health and remaining life, if I do it. Can you inform me if there will be any consequences because of this abstetion!

Cut50years, you really hit the spot from every aspect you have mentioned. Thanks.
Then I keep on with my masturbation sessions!

Bye, bye with my dreams, I was thinking of becoming a Saint.
At my age I feel outdated for sex, and doing it is all in vain. A waste of time.

Once you have had the experience, you can judge this the best.
If you didn't like it or don't like it with more than a few people, it may be easier to abstain. If it is something you like to do and start getting itchy for it after a few weeks, you could get the classic withdrawl symptoms related to anything like alcohol. Mood swings, angry feelings etc.
If you willingly abstain, then you have to keep your mind on other things constantly. This can be very exhausting and I wouldn't be surprised if you continue your masturbating activities or increase the frequency.
I think that there are a lot of reports published about how the seratonin produced by having sex are beneficial to people in terms of aging and general happiness. Without these, you need some substitute and I think that you would be hurting your health in the long run.
So my conclusion is with a question if you feel masturbation to be part of the abstention or not. if so, you can really hurt your health. if not, you may be ok with abstaining from sex with another person.

Sex is a very basic part of human life, but some people do not seem to have much need for it emotionally and seem to get along ok. Others would feel a dramatic loss in the quality of their lives. Each person is different.
Physically, you could face an increased risk of developing prostate cancer. According to recent studies, a male should have at least 20 ejaculations per month to help fend of prostate cancer.(I know, I don't have time for that either! But I can dream can't I?)
There are no health advantages to celibacy, unless you are not healthy enough to engage in sexual activity.

Sorry, but there is no such research with verified results from multiple studies. Looking at celibate orders of monks, there is no evidence that there is a causal link between abstinence and cancer of the prostate.
The key issue here is why you want to stop. If it is through religious or ethical grounds, then by all means become celibate. If it is for health considerations, then you only need to refrain from sex if you are ordered to do so by a doctor. Generally, medical practitioners consider sex a healthy part of a person's life, and rarely insist that you refrain.
It's a personal choice, and there is no impact one way or another on your health.

Why.
Sex is a normal healthy activity if you abstain you are choosing to deny a natural pleasue that is the veryy essence of life.
( providing its between consenting adults)
So the answer to what happens is you will lead a less fullfilled life. Sure you can keep busy but why?

Most of the time, it won't be your decision to abstain, especially if you are married.
