Awww. I must commend your son on his excellent pet choices :D
I used to have snails too (they really like cuttlefish ;)
how about the always good, Sheldon. Brian (from the magic roundabout). or you could go the obscure route and call him Phi (also known as the Golden Section - the mathematical equation found in the spiral of his shell).
theres no such thing as a male or female snail they're hermaphrodites so girl or boy names are both cool.

Bob.
Slimey.
Yahoo.
Fred.
It doesn't matter what he names his snail. Make it fun for him though. Create adoption papers for the snail and hand them to your son after he decides on a name. Make an 'official' rite of passage for the boy, stimulate his creativity.
Its one of the things he'll remember for the rest of his life, and keep him smiling long after you're gone.

Silas. There was "Silas the Snail" on an old show on Nickelodeon when I was a kid (called Pinwheel). He was a smart snail with glasses...too cute!
