Microbiology is the study of very small organisms (micro organisms)

For example: we study the Staphylococcus aureus bacterium. We do this because it is something that infects the human being and we want to know how to cure the infection. Similarly we study the Escherichia coli bacterium, or the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, or the Plasmodium falciparum parasite etc.

Biotechnology is the study of how living creatures / systems work - and also how to apply this to make things work in other ways.

For instance: we study the Escherichia coli bacterium because (apart from it being a pathogen) we know that we can infect it with a certain type of virus and make it create insulin. We can collect the insulin and purify it and then give it to diabetic patients.
