depends on their lifestyle....
1) coke user
2) cultural sign that they are of a higher rank in society - "i dont do manual labor"
3) wiring specialist type engineer -- my dad's was always a little longer due to his job and needing to pull apart very fine wires - it was like a tool of the trade. (but it wasn't grosslu long)
4) this i'm taking from the other posters - nose picker LOL that was too funny!!

In some cultures it allegedly proves that you are not a manual labourer, and so you are able to have a long fingernail (as an office worker or professional). There's also the belief that some use it instead of a small spoon for snorting drugs like cocaine, but I think that's less credible an answer.

guitar players who grow the finger nails grow all the fingernails on the hand that they pluck the strings on.
but the the pinkie nail grown out is a trend from the 70's to scoop up cocaine and sniff it. also the reason why it's usually painted or polished. my dad was a dealer back in those days and he would explain all that stuff to me =/

its a similar reason white human beings keap there pinky lengthy. FOR drugs!!! its no longer in simple terms black human beings each and every of the pot heads at my paintings do it and they are all white plus my uncle and some white adult males in my practise. ive actualy not in any respect considered a black guy with a lengthy pinky nail

its an asian tradition it seems
quite a few of them have long little fingernails
- now there's a useless piece of info for ya!

I know a couple of guys like this, and it helps them make a perfect spliff (packing it) - no kidding. Thats why they have them anyway, though I imagine they are also handy nose pickers for them too...
