Cool! An alligator would be easier to find but you might think of other various lizards. In some states selling alligators is not legal. There are many of them available. Iguanas are really cool and fairly easy to keep if you can keep them warm enough. They will grow from a small one to four or five feet if you take good care of them. We had to finally get rid of ours when it got that big, not because it was a problem but because it scared off visitors.
I raised Argentine Horned Frogs (sometimes called Pac-Man frogs) for a while which is also pretty easy. They need a good supply of food though, we caught smaller frogs and siened minnows at a creek nearby cutting the cost to nothing. If you have to buy food it can be very expensive as you probably already know.

Try some of the poison dart frogs from Central and South America. They are beautiful and not too difficult to care for. Anacondas are often unpredictable and bite readily...I've keep both the green and yellow and have scars from both. I suggest the strawberry dart frog...you'll need to have a good culture of fruitflies. Another frogs is the big Green Tree Frog from Australo-Asia....almost palm sized....and they will eat small mice.....but no on the crocodile....they just get too big and even the dwarf one (from Central Africa) grow over four feet and most are very expensive. You could go to a reptile swap and have your choice amongst many captive bred animals, free of disease and good feeders.....I really like some of the color variations of the False coral snakes of Central America...but I don't like the albinos much.

You could have a draino drinking constest with yourself I guess.
Yeah it's legal to own a crocodile. In fact you don't have to list them as pets on an appartment application since they're legally considderred fixtures in rental law. My friend had one, he has a nasty bit of poorly healed flesh on his calf from when he had to kill the little guy.

It's illegal to have a pet alligator, but it would be cool to have one if it WAS legal. Have you thought about a parrot or a conure? Get one while it's young, and they'll sit on your shouder all day.
