Not used like Aust-Down under.
Every bloke is a mate.
We don't like to call men mates.

Sure do mate it drives my wife crazy but I love the Aussie accent I really liked Steve Irwin it was a sad tragedy

We in the United States use the term when referring to our spouse or girlfriend. However with world growing smaller It's not uncommon for us to say "mate" as an endearing term for such people as a friend!
I would look this up in the Yahoo search engine and see what they have to offer you!

Yes but not so much as other words as it doesn't roll off the tongue as well with an American accent

i've heard it used by americans in the context of "flat-mate". never by itself!

nah, when i worked out there last summer, it was all 'buddy, dude and other 'cool' words like that!!!
