if This was The 19th century then i would say it was correct protocol but not in this day and age a white dress maybe hard to carry off in Autumn/winter because of shoes bag etc ask your colleague if she as heard of the tradition and get her views she doesn;t have to know its you, you are talking about enjoy the day buying the right gift should be more important than being "in the wrong"

You shouldn't because the bride is supposed to be the only one wearing white. Maybe you can find a dress in another color you like just as much as the white one. Hope this helps! Have fun at the wedding!

Maybe if it's a white dress that has other colours covering a large section of it, for example a big red flower print on a white background. But when in doubt, err on the side of caution. Noone wants to be known as the guest who tried to upstage the bride (and you'll be sure to get it damaged at the drinks reception).

I agree with that 100%. It's her wedding day and no one else should wear just plain white. Even if the outfit you have your eye on is not that glitzy and glamorous - just the fact that it is white will take some of the attention off her. And also people might look at you and think you're trying to do that. I would not recommend it.

I was told that to!!!I dont think its a good idea not unless the bride is wearing an unusual colour such as red, then you could wear white!!
Stick to something with a bit more colour, save wearing a white dress for when you get married x

apparently you shouldn't wear white to a wedding if you're not the bride.
traditionally, only bridesmaids should dress like the bride because it used to be thought that if bad spirits wanted to sabotage the wedding, then they would get confused by the bridesmaids.
however, i've worn a white dress but patterned with coloured flowers to two weddings and no one commented....

You can wear whatever you want, but I'm sure that the bride would be unhappy to see another girl in HER wedding wearing the same colored dress. I'd be mad if somegirl would come to my wedding with a white dres.

Kind of. It's more a tradition that the only person to be wearing white should be the bride.
It's also supposedly bad luck to wear black to a wedding.
