tony_revere is WRONG. Charles I was the head of the Anglican Church, was strongly Anglican, and was never accused of leaning towards Roman Catholicism. His elder son King Charles II converted to Roman Catholicism on his deathbed, and his younger son King James VII was deposed for his more overt Roman Catholicism making it impossible for him to be the head of the Anglican Church. The Glorious Revolution followed James VII.

Charles I was executed for treason. It was a difficult charge to make stick, because the law probably defined treason as conduct injurious to the King or to his status, or something like that, and part of Charles' defence was the self-contradiction inherent in the charge. But he had refused to acknowledge or obey the supreme power of Parliament, and that would have been treason for anybody else.

Because he believed in an absolute monarchy; he didn't like the idea of Parliament but ended up coming back to them a few times to ask for funding because he would blow wads of cash on lavish stuff instead of funding the nation.

His wife was extremely disliked because she was a Catholic and she often participated in "masques," or masquerade balls dressing up in costumes (the Puritan Christians didn't believe in acting or dressing up because it masked one's original, Godly self).

After enough of Charles' schtick, he was tried, found guilty, and executed. Then Oliver Cromwell came in and instituted a "new" government but even that turned out sour and then Charles II came in, bringing forth the "Restoration" period.

Charles I was killed during the Glorious Revoltion because he was a Catholic. That was the reason he was killed.
