Officially, not quite 200 years (1118, I believe, to 1307). Unofficially, a bit before that, but not long.

The order was founded around 1118 by French knights Hughes de Payens, a veteran of the First Crusade, and Godfrey de St Omer for the protection of pilgrims on the road from Jaffa and Jerusalem.

If you want to get into it, The scottish freemasons are the present offshoot of the Knights templar.

Religiousorderwise they evolved into the Knights of Christ which were disbanded in the 1500's.

Apart from that there were disbanded by papal order in the 1310's.

They still exsist they just keep it very well hidden. It is like the knights of the underground. you know one of those secret socities.But look up everything either on the net or in the library ,you might be able to find some older books that could explain better.

They still exist today. My friend who is a Freemason claims that they are the modern day Kights Templar. I don't know how true that is though.
