First off, make sure they are allowed in the dorm.
A fish that must be alone but can live in a small tank is a beta. They are very bright and come in many different colors. They can live with other kinds of fish, but just not other betas... they will fight each other. They are fairly easy to take care of, and not very expensive.
Another option would always be the classic goldfish. =)

DO NOT GET A GOLDFISH!
A bowl is a completely inappropriate home for a goldfish, and anyone who tells you otherwise doesn't know what they're talking about. You need a minimum of 10 gallons for a fancy goldfish, more for a single-tailed variety like comets.
The ONLY fish that can thrive in a bowl is a betta.

A gold fish! Very easy to take care of and not to expensive. Or if you prefer a more colorful choice...a beta! You only have to clean the cage every couple of months, and you only feed them every other day! Plus there are many color combinations to choose from! Make sure that you look up some info on them first though or ask an employee at the pet store. Also most importantly, be sure not to mix two males together!

I had a goldfish in college. I had it for 2 years in a bowl. Then I moved off campus and it came with me. One night my roommates were drunk and they wanted to see if my goldfish was a college fish (i was not there at the time, they told me about it later). The next morning, the fish was floating. They said I guess it is not a college fish. So needless to say, although they are fun to look at, fish are not a good idea unless you want to be flushing them every time your friends get drunk.

If you are creative enough you can get away with just about whatever you want. My roomate is an engineer and he built a 10 gallon fishtank into a coffee table a few days ago. Its pretty cool actually. We are getting cheap fish though because they are going to die for their month alone over christmas break. Neither of us really wants to take them home. I live in phoenix and go to school in indiana. But i suggest the coffee table thing so you dont have to worry about it taking up desk space or whatever. And everyone needs a place to put drinks.....

Something small and low maintenance like a gold fish. You can keep a couple in a small bowl and feed them a lil food every day and they're happy!

i would go with a beta fish. they don't require a pump that would take up an outlet. they don't need a huge tank of water, and they have a lot of personality. most dorms allow you to have fish and nothing else

hurry get yourself a betta, better yet, get a few and keep them in separate bowls, put them close and watch them trying to fight off each other. it's a joy to watch but never - NEVER put them in one bowl! i lost a few bettas cuz I totally forgot to separate the bowls and shocked to find one betta had jumped into the other and killed it! get the males cuz they're more active and colourful, the female are quite subtle and less active but still very colourful! Enjoy!
