Here's the link to the reference on HTML 4.0 (not 4.01).

Differences are only minor though, and 4.01 was released in 1999 and there were microscopic changes to it every since. So really, there has to be a big reason why you want to use strictly 4.0.

W3.org may be a bit complicated at first, but you need to remember that it is _the_ definitive HTML reference. For this reason I'd stick with it - eventually you'll get used to their syntax format and will find it more useful than any "simplified" version of the same thing.
