our fridge at work is really grubby and really needs a good clean (and guess who's the only mug that will do it?) so i was just wondering, what can i use to clean it that won't require much elbow grease and isn't too chemical? i've heard that bicarbonate of soda and washing up liquid mixed to a paste is a wonder solution for cleaning - has anyone tried this?

Use bicarb and some lemon juice as a paste. Green, smells nice and does the job. Then leave a small tub of bicarb in the fridge to elimnate smells.

Don't use anything strong scented! The recipe is 1 teaspoon Bicarbonate of soda dissolved in 1/4 pint near boiling water, made up to 1 pint with cool water. Just clean several times with that.
Supermarket own brand fridge cleaner is fine and will need less elbow grease, check the label.

I haven't tried your suggested method, but ordinary table salt, or granulated sugar mixed to a paste can work wonders.

How green do you want to be? A weak solution of (greenish) washing up liquid will clean most gunge from a fridge. But, if you are faced with a bad case of mold around the seals, then, I think you will have to disregard your green principles and resort to bleach, or perhaps, sterilising fluid (but I haven't tried the latter).

If it is that grubby you want to eliminate the germs in there! Use good antibacterial dish soap and hot water. Rinse with vinegar to remove soap residue. Be sure to wrap you own food stuff well so you don't catch some crud.

Make a paste with baking soda and water (or lemon juice) to scrub tough spots.

A mix of 1 part white vineagar and 1 part water will get rid of almost everything else.

use bicarb and a few drops of orange oil in warm water. The orange oil goes through any built up solids. Use toothpaste and a toothbrush to clean the rubber seal.

I would use plain white vinegar and then rinse it out with fresh water. It works pretty well and at the same time eliminates odours.
Good Luck
