Autumn/fall before the first frost is time to plant the tulips.
Tulips
Dig a hole approximately 6 inches deep.
Place bulb in hole with the bulb facing up.
Space bulbs about 4 to 6 inches apart.
Cover with dirt and water.
Planting in groups gives a wonderful display!!

Hi. Fall is a good time to plant tulips. They need a lot of cold weather to bloom well. I am in the south so it doesn't get (well, stay) very cold here. My mother-in-law puts hers in the refrigerator (crisper in a paper bag) for a couple of months before planting them in late fall.

The ground temperature should be around 55 - 60 degrees. You can check the temperature by placing a thermometer in the ground for 5 mins. and then checking it.

Hope this helps!

In Autumn before the first freeze...or in the Spring after the last freeze, but the spring bulbs will not flower until the following year.

Depending on your growing zone, it could be now. We normally
plant spring flowering bulbs about the time we get our first frosts. In growing zone 5, we'll be looking to plant tulips in a couple of weeks. You can check the USDA maps for growing zones and for date of average first frosts for your area. Thanks to the warming of our world, these dates are changing a bit.
