The birthtime has a lot to do with it. An actual horoscope is more than just your sun sign. It's all the planets (including Pluto). The time of birth is used to calculate your Rising Sign and Midheaven. The Sun Sign is the public you, while the Rising (also called Ascendant) is the inner you. The Rising sign is the sign that was on the eastern horizon at the precise moment you were born. Each sign has 30 degrees. It takes about 2 hours for each degree to change to the next on the eastern horizon. So, your natal horoscope chart (aka Birth Chart) and it's interpretations would vary greatly from a birthtime of 7 a.m. to a birthtime of 8 p.m. for the same day. Time is also used a bit for calulating the moon sign, but it take about 2 days for the moon to move through a sign, so the time's only really used for the Moon sign when it's on the cusp of changing to the next sign. Same for the Sun. (I'm a cusper Sun - my actual sun sign is a Virgo-Libra, I was born about 12 hrs after the Sun moved into Libra from Virgo - the Fall Equinox. This means that my sun sun is actually both, neither one or the other.) The Moon sign is your gut instinctive reactions. You have each planet in a sign, and that has interpretations, then you also have each planet in a house. The houses govern different areas of life, and the planets color the specific house that they show up in. Then you have aspects between the planets (aspects can be thought of how one planet looks at another). Hope this helps.

Time of birth is used to determine your Rising Sign, or Ascendant. When you get down to the minute mathmatical calculations of astrology, minutes can mean the difference between you having a Taurus Rising or an Aries Rising (for example).
Rising Sign/Ascendant is calculated by the where the eastern horizon was at the time of your birth, which is why exact time and location are important in calculating it.

The time of birth is very important to a true astrologer. It has to do with sun and moon placement. It is used to determine your rising sign. I am a Libra and Sagittarius rising. Which really means that I show some characteristics of both signs...mostly Libra though.

an accurate birth time can, can bring you a more accurate moon sign (since the moon changes signs every 2.5 days or so). and it can predict your Houses which is just as important as the rest of your chart. in most cases horoscopes in newspapers and magazines actually are supposed to go by your ascendent (cusp of the first house) because they often use the houses to predict things. even then those horoscopes are generally very vague.
The Ascendent (Rising sun), is your outer self, how you approach the world. it is in sense your mask.
The Midheaven (cusp of the 10th house), is your reputation, and your work ethic.
