Some of the time there is quite clear implicit racism, e.g. a lot of the immigrant bashing that goes on, but you can't necessarily report them for abuse because it is not that overt.

It's a tough question, and my response will usually depend on the tenor of the posting. If it's flat-out blunt violation of guidelines, I'll RAMO (report and move on), because this sort of person (in my experience) is not interested in exchanging ideas of views---they want only to troll or to bash.

I'd like to see more people RAMO, not for "unpopular" beliefs, but for the stuff that's in violation----let's not allow the trolls to run and ruin this place!

But if there's **any** suspicion of intelligent thought behind the posting, or if I believe that people "on the fence" or the curious might be following the thread, I may add specific comments challenging a thought process. Sometimes a comment that "sounds" bad may just be poorly phrased, and actually be innocent. Might not be a bad idea to give the person the benefit of the doubt.

(Case in point: there was a query along the lines of "is it true that black people can't drink milk?" and the OP--original poster---got a number of kneejerk reactions about being "racist." But lactose intolerance is very common worldwide--"lactose persistence" is the minority; see the Wikipedia article on l intolerance, or any decent medical book....)

Specific attacks to a person or group, while incredibly tempting at times (DON'T get me started on Fred Phelps and Westboro Baptist----ooops, sorry about that; ok, NOT sorry), don't really do much, other than relieve a bit of stress.

Y/A can be a great place for lively discussion within the q/a format, and I'd like to see plenty of spirited interchange between ALL sorts of people and belief systems, but this can---and should---be done in a civil fashion.

It has come to the point where no matter what you say someone will get offended and call it "racist". The term is so overused and misapplied it is ridiculous. Some people even say that if you call illegal mexicans criminals (which they are, under our laws) that you are guilty of rasicm, which is a crock, pure and simple. Even if it is statistically true that blacks commit more crime that whites, if you make a statement to that effect, which is borne up by fact, you are labelled a "racist" nonetheless. The pat response by anyone who does not like what you say, especially if it is a true statement, is to call you a racist or an anti-Semite, implying you are guilty of hate and how can you say such a thing; that it might be a completely true statement does not matter to them.

So I think that if your response to everything anyone says that you do not agree to is to call that person a "racist", you need to take a long hard inward look and find out what your real problem is.

I deplore racism
I will not ignore it , but will challenge the biggots who favour it ..

Racism is nasty and beyond my tolerance

However it is wrapped up,'overt 'or 'covert', it is very wrong .

It is the way of a bully to attack ,
someone for something ,that the victim is born with .

What race you are from , what sex you are and even how you look i,s beyond your control ;

to attack someone, just because they are different
is an act of the callous bully

i wont stand by and let ,whoever does that ,get away with it!
so in no way can you change your race, nor should you want to .

and before anyone jumps down my throat ,about free speech!
i have that right too.

I guess that would be a personal choice. Depending on how strong you feel about the subject and their answer. If you are going to ask a question and you want peoples opinions or views and then you report them, why bother to ask the question in the first place. Aren't you asking the questions to get others opinions and views and then if you don't like it you report them that doesn't make any sense to me considering this is a site for opinions and views and not everyone shares or has the same views as everyone else. That is what makes us all unique.

It really doesn't do much good to challenge them does it? I've found that if people are rude and ignorant enough to post their racist and aggresive attittudes then they are usually just getting their kicks out of making you angry. It's not just about immigrant bashing, they will bash nearly every topic that can generate an opinion. Ignore them. Funny though, I find myself being prejudice against the bashers. And the beat goes on.

Once you are done with clearing this problem up on yahoo answers -- then start with the rest of the world.

Seriously, I think the best thing is to ignore them and get on with your life. Yahoo can't constantly police this -- especially when you say "less overt". That stands to interpretation and now you are really into an impossible situation.

I always have said to myself with this sort of thing, I am not going to let someone else who I don't even know rob me of the joy, peace and love that God has allowed me to experience in life. Move on and don't let it bother you. God's judgement is just and totally sufficient. He doesn't need you or me or even yahoo helping Him deal with these people if they are truly wrong in their hearts.

That is good enough for me.

Good question.

Good luck.

I get angry and have to say my two cents worth just to make my heart feel better. Racist suck and you run into them all the time in life, they are just ignorant people who you should feel pitty for because they are not smart enough to know better or were raised terribly. I have run into the situation with family, friends of family, co workers, and so on. I wish that they could see that god made us all. People need to ask this question who were their ancesters? Where did they come from? Everyone has mixed blood and ancesters from around the world they just don't realize this.

I deal with them on a case by case basis. The most blatant, egregious and offensive ones I report. Others I answer. Some are so ridiculous, I just ignore them.

After you've been here awhile, you'll realize that confronting them is a total waste of time and keystrokes. They are too stupid to understand any words of wisdom you might care to share with them. The more eloquent you are, the more you will confuse them. Best to just ignore them. They won't go away, but you will soon learn to look past their remarks and they'll appear to fade into the backdrop.

ovid has yet to learn that he's never going to set them straight.
