When I was a child, I think grown-ups then taught children to chew their food 40 times. I don't think you should count how many times you chew your food because this will take all the pleasure out of eating. As long as you are not swallowing your food or forcing your food down before it is properly chewed, then it should be fine. The reason why you should chew your food is to make them easier to digest in the stomach. Also, starchy food is partly digested by your saliva so you need to allow time for your saliva to act on the food.

I heard its something like 40 as well! The more the better, but sometimes over chewing can reduce the 'quality' of the food as the saliva does attack certain bacteria that can be healthy for the body!

When I was at primary school (40 odd years ago) we were told to chew each mouthful 50 times. I can assure you this is near impossible. I think each person knows when they have chewed enough to swallow. We dont really think about it, it is just a natural thing.

As children we were told to chew everything 32 times before swallowing - the same as the number of teeth you had in your head - if you had a full set that is!

When I was a child (sometime ago) my parents always said to chew every bite forty times.
Of course there is a chance that if you are counting every bite
you will fall asleep before you finish eating!!!!!
