historians tell us that society began as matriarchal..meaning the women were in power over men, but it was in a different way. women were revered for their fertility, and "fertility" was understood as a concept that had more than one level of meaning to it.

can someone tell me when we switched from being martriarchal societies (women in power) to patriarchal societies (men in power) and the circumstances that caused this big change?
anyone know?
thanks.. :)

It is still merely conjecture as to how much real interpersonal and/or societal power spilled over to women from rituals of fertility, it may have well been only limited to the rituals and the symbols connected to them so as to insure future generation. In any event when the realization of the male role in childbirth was made it seems even that swiftly ended. Even primitive humans were not so stupid as portrayed on GEICO commercials and the mechanics and relationship as to where on the female body the sexual act occurs and from where babies enter the world were OBVIOUS.
