They supported them because it was all about religion. The Christians believed that Jesus Christ was the true savior and because he came from Jerusalem, they should be the ones that owned it, not the Muslims, who believed Allah was God. In all, the Christian priests in Europe were able to rally up soldiers to go capture Jerusalem.
