Krishna K has given a detailed reasoning for the bandh. It has, however, a slightly Karnatak slant. The matter is that on the reorganisation of the states in India onl lnquisic basis some border areas remained where the number of language speakers on either side were almost evenly matched. I belonge to the Maharashtra state but during my tours of villages in the areas bordering on Karnatak e.g.Jath taluka of Sangli district and Akkalkot taluka of Sohapur district had strong protagnonists of Kannada so much so that they refused to talk in Marathi even if they could follow it. The same situation obtains on the other side of the border with staunch Marathi speaking people. These people on either side feel they have been subjected to injustice. This situation must obtain everyhere in the world. The Maratha leaders on either side have been insisting on sessions of these dominant Marati areas and their inclusion in Maharashtra. Duiring the time when Vasantarao Naik was the CM,Maharashta the State had almost decided to secede the Kannad speaking border area and notify both Karnatak and hthe Central Govt. that they will not look after the administration of rhese areas anymore so convinced were they about the innate justice of these area to cross over in Karnatak. However, in view of the complications this will lead to the measure was abandoned,. However, unless such a unilatral goodwill is shown by Maharashtra the tie will not untie itself. The ground situation is that the Marathi dominated parties have invariablyt won all the local elections throughout ,Unless decisive action is taken inthe matter there will e similar bandhs and even riots in the times to come also.

Representatives of various Kannada organisations met here on Friday to reaffirm their resolve to make a success of the October 4 Karnataka bandh called to protest against the Centre's decision to change its affidavit in the Supreme Court on the Maharashtra Government's writ petition demanding the merger of Belgaum and other Marathi-speaking areas with that State.

Kannada Chaluvali leaders Vatal Nagaraj, MLA, and K. Prabhakara Reddy, former MLA; Chandrashekar Patil, president, Kannada Sahitya Parishat; H.S. Doreswamy, freedom fighter; S.R. Govindu, president, Akhila Karnataka Rajkumar Fans Association; Shivakumar, president, Kannada Rakshana Vedike; Kodihosalli Ramanna, journalist; C.V. Shivashankar, film producer; and Gurudev Rajkumar of the Kannada Chaluvali Kendra Samiti participated in the people.

Mr. Nagaraj urged the people to "show their might against the unjust and unfair decisions of the union government," which were affecting the interests of the state

Taking objection to the role played by Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil in the decision to change the affidavit, Mr. Nagaraj demanded that MPs and Union Ministers from the State should seek his resignation.

Mr. Nagaraj and Mr. Patil condemned Higher Education Minister D.H. Shankaramurthy for his remarks about Tipu Sultan and demanded his dismissal from the Ministry.
