I'd go to the beginning of the 1900's, before the stock market crashed. People had a lot of fun back then - before the depression in the U.S. it was party party party.

It's funny how everybody aches for a bygone era when the facts are that we have never lived so healthily, wealthy and as long as the present.
People who say that they would want to go back to the 18/19 century and be a rich land owner make me laugh, your ancestor during thoughs days would have died at 30 , eaten turnips for every meal and wiped the a**e of the Lord of the Manor.

Mid 20th - my own birthday in 1932, in fact, though much depends on place of birth and one's social start. So not Europe, or most of the rest of the world - just USA, Australia, etc. Too young for World War 1; too old for Korea, Vietnam, and the rest. I think my generation, born at that time and priviledged place, have had the best lives all humanity, past or future. We had a largely uncontaminated world, wild forests, and the rich diversity of wild animals and birds, without overcrowding, and free education. And then the most amazing new discoveries of science, and technologies like TV! Even with The Bomb overhead, it seemed the world was our oyster, and we could share it with all humanity, in time, in a great age of sanity. Now the earth on which we depend for life itself is dying while fools squabble, and the Neros fiddle, heaping more fuel on the fire. It's a desperately sad way to have to leave it all.

Nothing before the invention of penicillin, that's for sure! And nothing before the advent of the Beatles, either. Entertainment in this country must have been an absolute wrist-cutter before about 1963. Be nice to be an 18-year old in 1964, to see Beatlemania at first hand.

As I was born in 1972, I'd actually be going back in time about 26 years. That's a bit crap really isn't it?

Someone I know once answered this question by saying they'd like to go back to the First World War and experience life in the trenches. I am a military historian and interested in this subject, but in God's name WHY would you want to go back to it? Stuff that!

There are so many unanswered questions that you could lay to rest ... you could see Stonehenge being built, clap your eyes on Cleopatra, watch the Punic Wars or the destruction of Troy. You could check out what really went on between Harold and William the Conqueror, see Henry II in his prime, see Martin Luther nailing his sheet up on the cathedral door or Napoleon at Austerlitz.

For my money though, I'd plump for England 1630-1670 .. check out the political debate between King and Parliament and the subsequent wars, Oli Cromwell and the subsequent Restoration.

I would graciously decline the offer to travel. Several time periods interest my sense of curiousity. I am quite content to read about them and enjoy the world I live in right here right now because this is when and where I am supposed to be. Any time period has things in it that are very difficult, very challenging and very joyous. I take joy in the little everday things that most people simply pass over...

I would have loved to have been born around 1880, and to have been the lady of a stately manor. I would have been able to marvel all of the new inventions of the early 20th century and grow with change and see my children enter into a completely new world with new ideas and way of life.

I would love to go back to the the late 1300's, I'd love to meet Chaucer, watch a jousting tournament, dine at the courts, and in general just live life for those people were crazy when it came to entertainment.

I would like to go back to a time when the Scottish football team won something. On the other hand perhaps that would be going back too far.
