As you have already got answers of your question let me add little more information.
Actually ip addresses are used for retrieving information about pages. And this ip addresses are mapped in domain name.
Basically all this i.e com,.org are used for storing your domain names.
if you want to create your website in com domain then you have to pay to the person who is running .com domain. And if you want to create in .org domain then you have to pay to the owner of that domain and the likewise.

Suppose if you create your domain name like xyz.com then under your domain name if someone wants to create domain abc then it will be abc.xyz.com and then he will have to pay you and not .com company.
That means whatever domain created under your domain name will have to take your permission.

.com stands for commercial
.org is for organization
.net stands for network
.edu stands for education
.mil stands for military
.gov stands for government

Anyone can register for any of the .com, .org, or .net domain names.

Basically these are the ways to differentiate between COMmercial, ORGanizational, EDUcational, NETworks,BIZiness(read business) websites. This is a way to put the different website domains in various categories.
