No! When Tobe Hooper was a little boy he went to Wisconsin to visit relatives there; and he heard stories of a killer who made furniture from women...and you know how the mind of a child works! The man that the TCM is loosely based on is Ed Gein. He was a mother-fixated man; when his mother died....he lost it! The house he lived in was like a house of horrors! In every room! I watched a show on the Biography Channel about him once. His most recent victim (when they went to his home to investigate) was hanging on a meat hook in his tool shed.....her intestines were in a box.....her heart was on a platter in the dining room! Can you imagine how Tobe's imagination responded to this??? Put in Ed Gein on the Yahoo search and it will take you to "Ed Gein: The real American Psycho". It is a website set up to dispel the rumors that the TCM is just a myth!

The film, like the films Psycho, Deranged and The Silence of the Lambs, was loosely inspired by Ed Gein. Gein did wear human skin, but he acted alone and did not use a chainsaw. Although the film's opening would have one believe that the events are factual, it is merely a scare tactic, called the false document technique, to frighten the audience. Libraries in Burkburnett, Texas and nearby Wichita Falls regularly receive requests for copies of newspaper articles related to the false actual events.

No it isn't. Hooper put that at the first part of the movie to scare the crap out of people. He based the story LOOSELY on the life of Ed Gein who was a serial killer in Wisconsin.
Robert Bloch also based Norman Bates on Gein which was eventually made into the movie Phycho. The Gein story was horrific. Much more so than that of the movies.

the character of leatherface was based loosely on ed gein who was also the inspiration for norman bates in pyscho. Gein was quite a character and has been an inspiration for many pyschopathic killers in the later 1/2 of the 20th century

The film is partly based on the murderer Ed Gein, who wore his victim's skins as a mask (among other things. He also made coats from their skin and kept several body-parts in shoe-boxes in his home)(Also used in films like Silence Of The Lambs). It is also partly based on actual cannibal-hillbilly families in America (as are films like Wrong Turn).
