Being a creature of logic I tend to prefer Star Trek.
The characters in ST are more rounded and beleiveable than the architypal heros and vilains in Star Wars, granted moreso in the more up-to date shows but you didnt specify which Trek. compare Q to vader or Jabba the hut. he has to be the best baddie ever written.
As a kid i watched and kind of liked both until Wrath of Kahn. yeah i know its lame by todays standards but that film scared the hell out of my younger self - the bit with the bugs in the ear - so much so that i stil have an ear phobia. what in Star Wars has the power to get inside you (metaphorically speaking *shudder*) and produce that much emotion: "Eeek bin liners!" - y'see, it doesn't really work.
perhaps there's a gender divide on this question because as a young girl, I never really wanted to be the helpless pricess who needed rescuing, I wanted to be on the bridge in the heat of the action. I never identified with skywalker, a 'noble young man chosen for a dangerous quest' *yawn* and even if I did I'd have read Lord of the Rings.
Live long and proser ;)

This is a hard one, I love Star Wars but the prequels sucked big time, and I also love Star Trek all incarnations, true some episodes were rubbish but on the whole most were excellent.
But I think I will have to choose Star Wars (the Original Trilogy) as my overall favourite.

Star Wars. I can't stand Star Trek. I find it boring, as in most of the episodes there is little or no fighting, and the ships don't strike me as any good in combat, especially as they're meant to be warships!
I could picture a lone Star Destroyer going up against a Star Trek ship, deploying it's fighters and bombers, and turning the Star Trek ship into scrap. It only has a couple of weapons, and despite it being powerful, it would be heavily outgunned.

Star Wars definitely. Trek is good because of the quantity of it, but the Wars films (the original 3) are a part of my childhood that will never go away :)

Star Wars because Star Trek tried too hard to be ahead of its time and failed miserably.
